MSRTC is the public bus transport service of the Maharashtra State Government. It operates around 16,000 buses on 17,000 routes, serving approximately 7 million (70 lakh) passengers daily. In India, MSRTC is the third-largest bus service; the first and second largest are APSRTC and TNSTC.
The corporation is the largest fleet owner in India and offers online bus booking and reservation for all its 17,000 routes. In addition to Maharashtra, it operates buses in Gujarat, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Goa.
MSRTC History
In the 1920s, bus services in Maharashtra began without any regulatory laws. Initially, these services operated in an ad hoc manner. After the Motor Vehicle Act came into force in 1939, the standardisation of routes, bus schedules, bus stops, and fare regularisation was implemented.
In 1948, the Bombay State Government started its public bus transport service, sponsored by the State Government and known as State Transport Bombay (BSRTC). In the same year, the first silver and blue-topped bus ran between Pune and Ahmednagar
In 1950, the Central Government passed the Road Transport Corporation Act, which allowed state governments to establish their own road transport corporations. After this act, the Bombay State Road Transport Corporation (BSRTC) was formed, which was later renamed the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) after the reorganisation of states.
Bus Fleet and Workshops
MSRTC is the largest bus fleet owner in India, operating 16,000 buses daily. MSRTC has its own workshops for manufacturing buses at Pune, Nagpur, and Aurangabad, using TATA and Ashok Leyland chassis. In these workshops, ordinary, city, and Asiad buses are manufactured.
The annual manufacturing capacity of these three workshops is about 2,000 buses. Apart from these, MSRTC has 32 divisional workshops for bus maintenance and 9 tyre retreading plants.
MSRTC continues to play a crucial role in providing affordable and widespread public transport across Maharashtra and neighbouring states, connecting even the most remote villages and towns.
